Cafes were the beating heart of British cycling in the 1950s and ‘60s, the places to re-fuel, meet, catch up and share the gossip. This is Walt’s near Blyth in North Nottinghamshire. More correctly the Bridge Tearooms, it was close to the fastest time trial courses in the area and the beds in its bunkhouse, to the left in this picture, were slept in by countless racers from weekend warriors to world champions.   

One of three A3 art prints by the pioneering photographer Dennis Lowndes exclusive to www.cyclinglegends.co.uk. Dennis was from South Yorkshire and was working with colour film from the early 1950s. He never sent his photos to magazines or newspapers, but took them for love, content to capture the spirit of British cycling, from clubs runs to champions.
